June 16, 2025 — The 35th annual Best of NeoCon Awards kicked off NeoCon 2025 with a high-energy ceremony at THE MART in Chicago, spotlighting the most forward-thinking products transforming the future of commercial interiors. A cornerstone of the commercial interiors show since 1990, the iconic Best of NeoCon program celebrates exceptional solutions spanning workplace, healthcare, education, retail and hospitality. This year, 96 awards were given to exhibitors for products across more than 40 categories, with honors awarded for Gold, Silver, Innovation, Sustainability and Business Impact. The program’s top distinction, Best of Competition, was awarded to HALCON for its ASTORIA collection of conference and mobile communal tables. People’s Choice Awards were presented June 10, giving the industry a voice in the awards.

A multidisciplinary jury of 42 architects, designers, specifiers, enterprise clients, and facility managers (FMs) — including leaders from Gensler, Corgan, CannonDesign, Marmon Mok, Shepley Bulfinch, Aflac and Walgreens — convened on-site at THE MART to evaluate submissions throughout the NeoCon show floors. An additional panel of eight business media professionals and two facility managers determined the Business Impact Awards. See the full jury list here.

The jurors were incredibly thoughtful and rigorous in their evaluations this year. The winning products aren’t just keeping pace with industry trends — they’re actively driving critical design movements, from circularity and neuro-inclusive thinking to the integration of AI and advanced material innovation. We saw manufacturers embrace empathy, rethink flexibility, and experiment with form and function, addressing the evolving ways people live, work, heal, learn and connect now.

Eileen McMorrow, director of Best of NeoCon

The Best of Competition-winning ASTORIA collection by HALCON is tailored for the modern workplace and crafted to create elevated spaces for connection, conversation and community. Jurors praised the well-appointed assortment for its exceptional design and everyday usability, highlighting its sculptural bases, refined materials and thoughtfully concealed rolling casters. With flexible configurations, integrated technology options, and meticulous attention to detail, ASTORIA offers a compelling solution for today’s dynamic environments.

“Elegance is the key word when it comes to ASTORIA. It makes the capabilities seem too good to be true. Here, you will not be sacrificing design for functionality,” notes the jury. The line was also recognized for Gold Awards in the Collections for Collaboration, Tables: Café, and Tables: Conference categories.

May 27, 2025 — Provided by SAFCO — As education increasingly emphasizes practical, career-focused learning, vocational programs are gaining traction. Trade school enrollment has risen nearly 5% since 2020, outpacing traditional four-year colleges. Rising tuition costs, demand for skilled labor, and clearer career paths are drawing in Gen Z and non-traditional students. Social media is also reshaping perceptions, showcasing the success and hands-on appeal of the trades.

While vocational education was once stigmatized, attitudes are shifting. A Jobber survey found that 74% of young people still perceive a stigma, but growing workforce needs are changing the narrative. Skilled trades like HVAC are seeing 15% annual job growth, with wages up more than 20% since 2020. Technical fields such as healthcare and IT are also expanding — nurse practitioners alone are projected to grow 46% by 2031.

Despite this momentum, many vocational facilities remain outdated. SAFCO’s TechWorks line offers modern, tech-enabled solutions built for adaptability. With durable benches in multiple sizes and a modular frame supporting shelves, pegboards, lighting and power, TechWorks is ideal for labs, classrooms and engineering spaces. Reconfigurable and resilient, it helps institutions create future-ready environments that support engagement, skill-building and long-term success.

Dee Dee Bonds

Dee Dee Bonds, Vice President & Studio Practice Leader, Health Interiors, HKS, Orlando, is part of the team working on a new pediatric campus for a 4.5 million-sq-ft. facility that will be one of the largest greenfield pediatric hospitals in the nation and a musculoskeletal care institute. Evaluating products through the lens of functionality, sustainability, and user-centered design directly aligns with my role in helping shape healing environments for institutions like Children’s Health and Emory Healthcare. This allows me to support the advancement of excellence in commercial interiors while reinforcing the standards I apply in my own work,” says Dee Dee Bonds, Studio Practice Leader, Interiors, HKS, Inc. “I’m expecting to gain firsthand exposure to emerging trends, materials, and furniture solutions that push the boundaries of performance and design — particularly those applicable to healthcare environments. The new hospital will significantly increase access to this vitally needed care, but will also keep families closer to home and their family-friend networks which can help in recovery. The design is taking a hospitality approach to patient care with more human-scaled design, softer look, and indoor/outdoor access.”

Suzanne Lefebvre

“I am excited to return to the NeoCon jury this year. I understand the importance of evaluating products that define the future of design, innovation, and sustainability,” says Lefebvre (left). “I am drawn to NeoCon because it brings together cutting-edge solutions that not only meet the needs of today’s market, but look towards being more inclusive for all end-users.”

Jurors will engage in an immersive evaluation of every Best of NeoCon entry — allowing for careful deliberation, meaningful dialogue with manufacturers, and product testing. This face-to-face exchange, paired with the jury’s thorough onsite assessment, upholds the Best of NeoCon program’s reputation as the most trusted industry benchmark for design excellence.

“Each year, we select a jury with a keen understanding of how products influence the built environment,” remarks Eileen McMorrow, Director of the Best of NeoCon Program. “Their expertise — from both the interior design perspective and the facility manager and end-user experience — is invaluable in recognizing solutions that push the industry forward.”

Awards are given for Gold, Silver, Innovation and Sustainability, and the singular Best of Competition honor. The Business Impact Awards will also return, recognizing products that drive organizational performance through smarter workflows, cost savings, space optimization and other strategic outcomes. Returning to work in the office is both the mantra of Corporate America and the federal government. Professionals are learning new ways of working and how to be as productive as possible in the workplace. Businesses and government entities are renewing or transforming interior spaces and considering furnishings, amenities and perquisites that will make employees comfortable and productive.

Every investment and improvement that supports workers or the workplace, students on campus, or civil servants, also has to be evaluated for the bottom line. Facility managers, building owners, their interior designers and building service contractors are looking to partner with brands whose products result in lower total cost of ownership (TCO).

Graphic courtesy of Bobrick

Total cost of ownership (TCO) means the complete cost of owning and operating a product or service throughout its entire lifespan, including the initial purchase price, maintenance, operation, potential downtime, and disposal costs, essentially considering all direct and indirect expenses associated with it over its lifecycle. Businesses often use TCO to compare different products or services, even if one has a lower initial price, to understand which option will be more cost-effective in the long run.

In all commercial workspaces or learning environments, the restroom is a destination for essential relief and sometimes a space to take a breather where users notice how well appointed and maintained it is. Bobrick Washroom Equipment, Inc. creates high-quality, industry-leading restroom accessories that save building owners, facility managers (FMs) and building service contractors time and money, resulting in lower total cost of ownership (TCO).

While TCO is critical to owners, it is more important if the products that deliver it are also functional and aesthetically pleasing. Bobrick meets the needs of architects and building owners by crafting restroom accessories that combine durability, style and functionality. Made with premium materials like diecast zinc and stainless steel, the products are designed to deliver exceptional durability while maintaining a sleek, elegant appearance. Created to be durable, timeless and efficient, Bobrick restroom accessories complement other traditional restroom design elements.

“Bobrick products not only enhance the look of your space but also help reduce long-term maintenance costs, offering a smart, stylish investment without compromise. With durable construction and innovative technology, our designs ensure reduced maintenance demands, giving facilities a more reliable and cost-effective solution over time,” says Nilofar Yagana, vice president of marketing for Bobrick. “What sets Bobrick apart is our focus on cost-saving. Our soap and towel dispensers are compatible with economical, widely available consumables, eliminating the need for restrictive, high-cost contracts and providing businesses with greater flexibility and budget control.”

Backed by a vast and reliable distribution network — including major e-commerce platforms and trusted local suppliers — Bobrick’s products are designed to be easily accessible and readily available. This network is supported by dedicated local representatives who provide personalized service, ensuring expert guidance tailored to each project’s needs.

“Our products combine quick lead times, durable and low-maintenance designs with easy access to products and universal refills to optimize restroom efficiency,” said Yagana. “Plus, our dedicated representatives are available every step of the way to help simplify restroom management.”

Components of TCO

TCO can consider installation costs, training costs, energy consumption, repairs, depreciation, and even potential disposal fees.

When facility managers and purchasing agents specify Bobrick restroom accessories, such as tissue and towel dispensers, automatic soap dispensers and faucets, waste receptacles and hand dryers, TCO can apply to:

  • The initial purchase price
  • User convenience
  • Maintenance
  • Restocking
  • Lifecycle
  • Potential reapplication during a renovation
Source: Bobrick Cost Calculator

TCO, or actual cost, quantifies the cost of the purchase across the product’s entire lifecycle. The concept extends beyond just the upfront cost of buying something, taking into account all ongoing expenses related to using and maintaining it.

With Bobrick, there are no proprietary contracts for the products that go in the dispensers. FMs can acquire Bobrick soap, paper, and tissue dispensers that are designed to be compatible with a wide range of consumables, eliminating the risk of supply interruptions tied to specific soap or paper brands. Unlike proprietary systems that left many facilities struggling with unusable dispensers during COVID-era shortages, Bobrick’s open, universal design ensures flexibility — allowing facilities staff to source consumables from multiple suppliers without the need to replace dispensers. Counter-mounted soap dispensers are designed for convenient top-filling with cost-effective bulk soap, reducing both labor and soap expenses. Unlike bottom-filled cartridge dispensers, which require frequent replacements and higher costs, Bobrick’s bulk-fill system streamlines maintenance and ensures long-term savings.

“Our goal is to save building owners and facility managers time and money,” said Yagana. “Our products reduce maintenance and labor costs and save thousands in soap and paper costs over their lifetime. With easy-to-access refills, facilities stay stocked and running smoothly with minimal downtime.”

Bobrick’s Fino soap dispenser can accept any brand of cleanser.

With innovative features like touch-free technology, the products not only promote better hygiene by minimizing contact but also elevate the overall restroom experience, ensuring comfort and convenience for all users. Whether in high-traffic commercial spaces or smaller facilities, Bobrick solutions are designed to meet the demands of modern restrooms with style and reliability.

Bobrick’s well-designed, performance-engineered and efficient restroom products are found in countless institutions, offices, stadiums, airports and restaurants in hundreds of countries globally. During NeoCon, June 9–11, visit Bobrick in space 7-5034.

April 14, 2025 — With strong confidence in the reliability of American manufacturing and domestic sourcing, Versteel has announced an aggressive promotion on all standard tables for the dealer network in the contract furniture industry. This program enhances the ability to buy American-manufactured, tariff-free tables at a greater value while maintaining exceptional quality and rigorous attention to detail.

As a leader in US-manufactured furniture and expert metal craftsmanship, Versteel proudly produces its tables at its Indiana-based facilities using high-quality American steel, a material known for its strength, longevity and sustainability. Since its founding over 40 years ago, Versteel has partnered with reputable American steel fabricators in Indiana and neighboring states. By prioritizing domestically sourced materials, Versteel supports local industries and ensures that every table meets the highest standards of performance and integrity.

Scott Schwinghammer, president and CEO at Versteel, stated:

This program is a reflection of our continued faith in American manufacturing and our desire to pass those benefits on to our customer. By producing our tables domestically, we’re able to offer tariff-free pricing that delivers real savings without the risk of fluctuating import costs.

Versteel’s success is built on the devotion of its manufacturing team, who take pride in producing American-made products, fostering a strong sense of purpose and ownership. In-house welding, laser cutting, powder coating, and other artisan processes bring valuable trade jobs to Indiana, while supporting local trade schools, and strengthening the regional economy.

While Versteel continues to invest in American manufacturing, the company also values the important relationships it shares with international partners who contribute to its global success. By working with globally recognized designers and innovators, Versteel has infused its American craftsmanship with fresh perspectives, cutting-edge aesthetics, and enhanced functionality.

The tariff-free promotion applies to all Versteel tables utilizing standard specifications and materials. It is available to open, approved accounts in good standing with Versteel. This offer gives customers the flexibility to plan for their projects with confidence while enjoying consistent, tariff-free pricing on Versteel’s industry-leading tables.

April 3, 2025 Contract furniture manufacturer Sandler has just announced the opening of its first furniture showroom in New York City. Having had a sales presence there for years, there is now a space where designers and specifiers can come see the beauty of the furniture in person. Set in Midtown’s NoMad area, the Sandler showroom welcomed hundreds of guests at the grand opening on March 25, 2025.

The showroom is filled with ancillary and hospitality furniture from Sandler, and case goods and millwork by Formica Corporation, their partner in the space. It is laid out in a collection of vignettes, including a conference room, meeting tables, quiet room, reception area, and various seating areas.

We chose this central location because we wanted to be in the heart of the city, near so many other members of the design community. We’ve had sales reps in the area for years, and it was time to put down roots and open a showroom that people can visit. They can come see the quality of the craftsmanship, test the furniture’s comfort, and ask all their questions about design possibilities. The showroom is for the industry – we want people to feel free to use it as a coworking or relaxing space.

Roy Sandler, CEO of Sandler

The New York showroom is located at 875 Avenue of the Americas, Suite 1605. Guests can arrange a visit
by contacting their local rep.

Sandler has sales representatives nationwide, plus other showrooms in THE MART and at Fulton Market in Chicago.

Provided by ABM — In the world of facility management, the quality and functionality of your buildings can directly impact their value, tenant satisfaction, and long-term profitability. Whether it’s office buildings, industrial spaces, or mixed-use developments, maintaining a well-functioning facility is key to staying competitive in today’s market.

To achieve this, you need a facility services partner that not only understands the nuances of commercial real estate but also delivers integrated solutions that enhance every part of your facility — that’s where ABM comes in.

By streamlining services such as building maintenance, janitorial services, landscaping, and specialized project work, ABM can help elevate the performance of your properties and position them for a successful future.

Keeping your spaces clean and healthy

Cleanliness goes beyond aesthetics — it’s about creating a healthy, welcoming environment for tenants and visitors. From office buildings to multi-tenant commercial spaces, sanitation services from ABM ensure that every part of your facility is thoroughly cleaned and properly maintained.

Supporting property management

Whether you need temporary staff for move-ins, move-outs, or special tenant requests, ABM provides skilled labor to meet your specific needs.

Enhancing curb appeal

When it comes to your facility, first impressions matter. The exterior of your building is the first thing tenants and visitors see, making it essential to keep your grounds attractive and well-maintained. Landscape services from ABM are designed to enhance the aesthetic appeal of your facility, improve functionality, and ensure safety.

Tailored solutions for every facility

Facilities often require specialized services that go beyond routine maintenance and cleaning, which is why ABM offers a wide variety of specialty services. Whether it’s concierge services to enhance tenant experience, pressure washing to maintain building exteriors, or painting and parking lot striping to improve both aesthetics and functionality, ABM can handle it all and more.

ABM: Not just a provider — a partner

One of the greatest advantages of partnering with ABM is the ability to consolidate your facility management services under one roof. By combining multiple service offerings, ABM helps you streamline your operations and reduce overhead.
