The design-build industry has every incentive to stop contributing to landfills, to question conventional construction methods, and to limit damaging emissions because its leadership cares about the future of our planet and humans’ wellbeing. Fortunately, FreeAxez designed Gridd with the goal of creating a system that would be long-lasting and reusable. The low-profile raised floor and cable management system is made from steel, one of the most durable materials available, has minimal components and is infinitely reusable.

Gridd® by FreeAxez is a low-profile raised floor and cable management system that counters construction’s negative impact and makes a positive difference. Gridd was created with the goal of remaining in use forever — easily relocated, reconfigured or repurposed — and never being discarded into a landfill. FreeAxez commissioned The McMorrow Reports to research and write the paper, The Circular Economy of Gridd®: How to Deliver the Power to Change.

This paper explores the circularity of Gridd as considered under ISO 59.010 Standard: Circular Economy. A case study is presented that compares a project with conventional wiring and cable management (with wires and cables above ceilings and embedded in walls) to a project that uses Gridd, with the goal of illustrating how Gridd is not only a circular product, but also is a fantastic alternative to other cabling methods because of the potentially smaller carbon footprint for installation.

April 4, 2022 — Power supply provider ECA by Dekko has just announced the launch of Electrolite — an innovative portable power outlet for the contract furniture industry that combines configurable power with 360-degree intentional design.

    Dekko power outlet
ECA by Dekko’s portable power outlet customizes with up to five receptacles and two USB charging ports

Dekko General Manager Rick Fox explained:

Users and specifiers can configure nearly every aspect of Electrolite to fit their specific needs. No matter what angle you view the product from, its consistent form can be felt.

With its high level of customization, Electrolite can be made for virtually any space.

    High product configurability

Power products typically lack the options and flexibility to truly adapt to surroundings. Electrolite shakes up the status quo and opens a new world of possibilities.

    Fox continued:

People today expect the ability to change up their workspaces. We saw a distinct need to create a configurable power solution for dynamic environments, and the result is Electrolite.

Specifiers can choose one, two, three, four or five tamper-resistant receptacles as well as a reversible USB-A charging port and a 60-watt USB-C Power Delivery charging port. The reversible charging ports are touted as a unique feature that enables a user to connect a Type-A cable without worrying about the plug or cable’s orientation. In addition to more than 17 possible configurations, Electrolite allows users to rotate the outlets within the product as well as the strain relief of the cord exiting the back of the product (either straight or a 90-degree rotation).

    Dekko undermount power outlet
Electrolite offers a variety of mounting options, including clamp mount, undermount and freestanding. Image courtesy Dekko

The 90-degree rotation option is ideal for use on a work surface placed against a panel or wall, while the straight angle works best for work surfaces integrating the freestanding and undermount models. The rotating outlets provide users the ability to accommodate any style of chargers and plugs, including Apple bricks.

Electrolite offers a modern color palette that specifiers can chose from including black, white, bronze, latte and carbon. Custom colors are also available. Units can be further customized with a monochromatic scheme, a painted body or a painted faceplate color variation.

As part of its configurability, the product also offers a variety of mounting options, including clamp mount, undermount and freestanding.

    Design-focused

In designing Electrolite, ECA by Dekko focused not only on the front-facing portion of the unit but also on the entire 360-degree package.

    Fox remarked:

Many power products don’t consider what the back and mounting looks like. We did, ensuring a design that can be shown at all angles and for all situations and applications. Height-adjustable tables and freestanding desks are perfect examples of where you’ll see the back of a unit — and Electrolite doesn’t disappoint. It looks great from any angle.

The device’s robust craftsmanship consists of a weighted metal structure in a die cast and extruded aluminum, giving it a premium feel.

    Advanced charging technology and safety

Electrolite offers users the best in power by incorporating GaN technology, which allows the output performance to increase, even as the size of the power unit decreases. This type of technology also protects devices from shorting out, while maintaining battery longevity and keeping the battery temperature safely in check.

Additionally, the option of a 60-watt USB-C Power Delivery port charges any device, including laptops, which Dekko points out is unusual for USB-Cs.

Electrolite is UL Listed for the U.S. and Canada and is FCC tested.

For more information about Electrolite, visit the Dekko website.

July 27, 2021 — Legrand, a global specialist in electrical and network infrastructure solutions, recently announced the launch of the Cablobend Systems, a flexible wire mesh fitting designed to save labor time typically spent by electrical contractors to create vertical drops for data centers.  This is the latest offering from the Cablofil brand which is the global benchmark for cable management systems, known for continuous innovation for electrical installations.

Legrand Cabloblend Systems for data center cable installation
Cablobend Systems flexible wire mesh fitting saves cable installation time and labor for electrical contractors creating vertical drops for data centers. Image courtesy Legrand

The Cablobend Systems provide an entirely new way for contractors to work on data center projects, claims Legrand. Every data center requires numerous cable tray bends and drops — sometimes thousands in just one installation, explains the company. With traditional cutting and bending, each drop can take over four hours to complete. The Cablobend Systems provide the freedom to flexibly create the bends and drops needed with no cutting required.

Chris Cooper, national account manager at Legrand, explains:

In response to the cable tray market demand for faster installation of horizontal and vertical bends, we’re thrilled to provide the Cablobend System, which not only provides labor and time savings but also offers a much easier installation than competitive products. For example, vertical bends with horizontal adjustments typically take contractors four hours for one bend. Cablobend gives them the ability to do this in 15 minutes, thus drastically reducing installation time.

Cablobend Systems encompass wire mesh grid assemblies that easily bend and flex, giving contractors seamless cable runs at the most difficult installation points. With a wide variety of widths and combinations, it’s easy to create nearly every bend needed with one product, says Legrand. Contractors can simply stretch and bend the flex wires a maximum of 4” at any location to fit configurations up to 90° horizontally or vertically, or join sections together for increased rigidity and strength.

With a variety of widths and combinations available, the system offers the freedom to create exactly what is needed. Available in three heights (2”, 4”, and 6”), seven widths (6”, 8”, 12”, 18”, and 24”), and two finishes (silver and black), each segment can lock easily in the field for rigidity. The complete system arrives at the job site already welded together and pre-assembled.

For more information on the new Cablobend Systems, visit legrand.us. The France-based company operates in nearly 90 countries globally, and incorporates numerous brands.

May 5, 2021 — Innovative workplace furnishings manufacturer Teknion Corporation recently announced the launch of the Carrier Desk, a classic writer’s desk with new relevance and purpose suited for a modern workstyle. Teknion’s Carrier Desk is a timeless desk that brings workplace functionality into home offices, says the company. Its intuitive design keeps all personal items within arm’s reach while routing wires discreetly for easy cable management. It’s also designed to be easily shipped and assembled.

Steve Delfino, vice president of Corporate Marketing and Product Development, Teknion, remarked:

This past year, work moved home for many of us, and we began to understand how limited our choices for the right furniture were — due to both the offerings and our own physical constraints. It was also incredibly complicated to understand what many commercial furniture companies were offering — unfamiliar categories, lingo and complex product maps — all at the cost of an easy shopping experience. We’re pretty excited by the changes we’ve made to our e-commerce site, as well as the new product additions like the Carrier Desk which really speak directly to the customer trying to make their home an office.

Steve Verbeek, vice president of Design + Innovation, Teknion, added:

We designed Carrier Desk to not only blend with existing residential furniture but also fit into small spaces within homes. The Carrier Desk’s minimal profile can easily fit in a small nook or corner but has enough space to neatly contain all necessary desktop accessories needed for a productive workday.

The Carrier Desk design is based on an old concept that works well with modern technology. Built-in functionality and commercial performance are cleverly incorporated. The desk surround keeps tools and accessories neatly contained, with the option for an additional desktop riser that integrates into the design as a second surface to elevate a laptop and/or monitor for improved posture and optimal positioning for Zoom calls.

The tiered surface also offers an additional area for organization and enclosed storage. Each Carrier Desk comes with an integrated charging tray and organizers, lined with soft felt, to store small items. The desk legs also come with levelers that can be adjusted up to one inch.

The Carrier Desk, measuring 42” wide and 24” deep, is constructed with laminate surfaces and painted metal legs. Color and finish combinations are varied to match every home’s existing interior. Finish combinations include:

    • Dark Timeless & Classic — Provincial Oak desktop with Foundry Onyx legs
    • Warm & Comfortable — Campus Oak desktop with Atrium White legs
    • White & Light — Ivory Birch desktop with Atrium White legs

The Carrier Desk is featured in Teknion’s new Look Book. The Look Book, which is featured on Teknion’s enhanced online store, is a unique collection of simple, versatile work-from-home essentials that can transform a room, or a corner, into a comfortable, functional workspace. Teknion’s design teams have re-envisioned classic office furniture to quietly mix with modern residential furnishings.
