January 14, 2025 — The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently dedicated the newly commissioned and environmentally sustainable air traffic control tower at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey.

The 157-foot-tall tower has a 750-square-foot cab that provides air traffic controllers a bird’s-eye view of the airfield. It sits atop a 19,000-square-foot base building that houses office space for controllers, technicians, and administrative staff. Both are designed to accommodate current and future operations.

The new tower meets the Guiding Principles for High Performance Sustainable Federal Buildings by reducing energy and water use, conserving resources, minimizing waste and protecting indoor air quality, among other things.

Aviation as an invaluable part of everyday life and our national economy, which is why we need the right infrastructure at our airports.  This taller and more modern control tower will not just make it easier for controllers to keep the National Airspace safe, but it will help the airport expand its flight operations. That means more options for consumers and businesses alike.

FAA Deputy Administrator Katie Thomson

The new tower is equipped with the latest state-of-the art technology to keep up with the current and future demand of the growing airfield. It replaces a 75-foot-tall tower that was commissioned in 1975.

The new Teterboro tower will house our controllers and our technicians doing what they do best — keep our skies safe, organized and efficient.

FAA Teterboro Air Traffic Manager Matthew Peterson

A total of 41 FAA employees work at the Teterboro tower — 29 in air traffic services and 12 in technical operations. Technical operations employees install and maintain air traffic control equipment.

The tower became operational in late October 2024. The final cost of the Teterboro Airport project is approximately $73.4 million.

December 2, 2024 — Governor Kathy Hochul and Governor Phil Murphy recently announced a proposal from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) for an expanded minimum wage policy at John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International airports that provides annual increases to the wages of thousands of airport workers starting in January 2025, with automatic increases tied to the regional cost of living, consistent with the minimum wage policies of the states of New York and New Jersey. The Port Authority Board of Commissioners last adopted an expanded minimum wage policy in 2018, which brought the wages of airport workers to a minimum of $19 per hour as of September 2023 but did not provide for any further increases without additional Board action.

The new proposal provides for three upfront increases of $0.75 in January 2025, July 2025, and January 2026. Beginning January 1, 2027, annual increases would be tied to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index (CPI) three-year moving average for the Northeast region, consistent with the two states’ minimum wage policies. The proposal provides for the wage to automatically increase to $25 in September 2032 if that level has not already been reached through the annual CPI increases as of January 2032.

The wage increase for airport workers is highly beneficial in helping to attract and retain more skilled labor to airport businesses, leading to improved customer experiences within the airports. A fairly compensated airport workforce leads to reduced turnover, resulting in a well-trained and experienced work force that can help to provide stable airport operations and an important supplemental security presence. Similarly, the Port Authority saw significant improvements in customer satisfaction following the previous minimum wage increases beginning in 2018.

The proposal we put forward today reflects our recognition and appreciation for the airport employees who work hard to look out for tens of millions of travelers at our region’s airports. Ensuring livable wages will improve worker satisfaction and increase staff retention, in turn enhancing customer service and advancing our goal of a world-class airport experience from curb to concession to gate.

Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton

Concession pricing

To offset the added cost to businesses operating stores and restaurants at Port Authority airports, the Port Authority also proposed a revision to the agency’s policy that regulates concession pricing at the agency’s airports. The revised policy will allow concessionaires to charge prices to their customers at a level not to exceed 15 percent of the local, off-airport “street prices” for comparable products. This rate is consistent with several other U.S. airports that share similar regulations seeking to set rate ceilings and prevent price gouging. The Port Authority will also allow airport concessionaires to add an employee benefits and retention surcharge not to exceed 3 percent of a customer’s pre-tax bill.

The permitted adjustments to pricing reflect the added costs of doing business in the airport environment, which include unique factors such as additional security, training, logistics, and higher construction expenses. Per Airports Council International North America, more than 80 percent of U.S. airports employ a “street pricing plus” policy to allow concessionaires to offset those added costs. The current policy caps all concession prices at local, off-airport “street prices” plus a maximum of 10 percent.

To ensure compliance with fair market pricing policy for goods sold at airport concessionaires, the Port Authority conducts routine monitoring to enforce compliance of the agency’s street pricing standards. Additionally, the agency reviews customer complaints from feedback forms and social media. If a concessionaire is found in violation of the pricing policy, the Port Authority, terminal operators and/or concessions management companies may take corrective action to ensure compliance.

PANYNJ airport redevelopment

The Port Authority’s redevelopment of its airports prioritizes significant improvements to customer service and experience, underscoring the need for highly skilled workers employed at its airports. So far, the agency’s focus in transforming its airports into best-in-class gateways has yielded internationally recognized accolades. These include the 2024 Skytrax honor naming Newark Liberty’s Terminal A as the world’s best new airport terminal, an honor similar to Skytrax’s award in 2023 to LaGuardia Airport’s Terminal B, as well as Skytrax’s highest rating at five stars for facilities, service and customer experience for both terminals at the two Port Authority airports based on traveler surveys.

The need for additional skilled airport workers will grow in the coming years as new or expanded terminals open as part of the Port Authority’s multi-billion-dollar redevelopment of John F. Kennedy International (JFK) and Newark airports. Within JFK’s $19 billion transformation, Terminals 1 and 6 are scheduled to open in 2026, while Terminals 4 and 8 are in the process of expansions and renovations that include new retail overhauls and opportunities for more airport businesses. At Newark Liberty, further redevelopment planning is underway with the release of the Port Authority’s EWR Vision plan following the 2023 opening of the new Terminal A.

The Port Authority is committed to soliciting public input as it considers these changes. Members of the public and all interested parties are invited to submit comments via the Port Authority website during a 30-day comment period. All comments received about the proposed policy will be submitted to the Port Authority commissioners for consideration of changes, if any, to the proposal. The Board will then take action on the proposal at its December 12 meeting.

32BJ reaction

In response to the announcement that the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is proposing an annual increase to the minimum wage for airport workers at JFK, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty airports beginning in January 2025, 32BJ President Manny Pastreich released the following statement:

For years, 32BJ has been leading the fight to improve conditions for the thousands of essential workers that make our airports a safe, clean and world-class travel hub. We are very proud that our efforts have now resulted in a proposal by the Port Authority, with the support of Governor Murphy and Governor Hochul, to significantly increase wages and ensure that airport workers are fairly compensated for the vital services they provide. With airlines raking in record billion dollar profits, the family-sustaining wages this plan will lead to is not only equitable but also what workers who keep our airports running have earned. This workforce investment will help the airports retain the experienced and well-trained personnel needed to safeguard the Port Authority’s critical infrastructure and deliver the highest caliber of customer service.

IDTechEx predicts the hydrogen airplane market will grow to US$28.4 billion, but only with strategic airport investment.

Technology research firm IDTechEx’s new report, Sustainable Future Aviation 2025-2045: Trends, Technologies, Forecasts, finds the hydrogen airplane market will be worth US$28.4 billion in 2045. The largest part of this will be coming from hydrogen-powered narrow-body commercial airliners. However, this can only happen with strategic infrastructure investment at the right airports.

Key airports and routes that could suit hydrogen-powered air travel in the US. Source: IDTechEx

Hydrogen is a promising option for the future of aviation. Unlike batteries, it has enormous gravimetric energy density, allowing the plane to carry plenty of energy without becoming too heavy. The limitation of hydrogen is its volumetric energy density — the space it takes up. Because hydrogen is light, it occupies far more space than jet fuel for the same amount of energy. At room temperature and pressure, a hydrogen tank would need to be more than 3,000 times the size of a jet fuel tank to hold the same energy.

Compressing hydrogen helps to get more energy into a smaller volume. Most companies looking at compressed hydrogen are considering 700 bar. Pressurizing hydrogen to 700 bar increases its density by a factor of 470, meaning the tank needs to be just over 7 times bigger for the same energy, but also that anybody looking to make use of hydrogen will need to invest in 700 bar hydrogen refueling infrastructure.

Liquid hydrogen (LH2) is even more dense. At 71g/L, it still weighs nearly ten times less than jet fuel for the same volume but now contains ~25% of the energy. So now, if a plane could be refueled with liquid hydrogen and got similar efficiency out of the engines, it could expect to get around 25% of the range. For something like an Airbus A320, or Boeing 737max, this would mean around 1,500km of range. This might not sound like much, but a surprising amount of flights are less than 1,500km.

IDTechEx’s report, Sustainable Future Aviation 2025-2045: Trends, Technologies, Forecasts, found that around 60% of all flights in the US (domestic and international) are less than 1,500km.

The range of a hydrogen plane can be improved further by switching to a fuel-cell electric propulsion system rather than a hydrogen-combustion turbofan. Doing this would extend the range of the hydrogen plane by approximately 50%, taking the 1,500km range up to 2,000+km for a narrow body. For a long-range wide-body like the Airbus A350, or Boeing 777, it could be possible to fly over 4,000km on hydrogen power. To put that in perspective, the longest flight in the 48 contiguous states is Seattle to Miami, at just under 4,400km.

Although highly promising, there is still a long way to go for hydrogen commercial flights to take off. There will still be years of testing, development, and certification before the first passenger-carrying flights come online. But along with the aircraft development, there will need to be infrastructure investment made at airports to handle liquid hydrogen. As such, it will take some key airports investing in the hydrogen infrastructure to kick-start the hydrogen-air travel market.

How the air travel market share grows as more airports are added to the network. Source: IDTechEx

In 2023 airplanes from Los Angeles (LAX) to Las Vegas (LAS) transported nearly 3.5 million passengers, making it one of the busiest routes in the US. Additionally, it is only 380km, making it easy to complete with hydrogen power, and possibly with battery electric. Furthermore, these airports are some of the key hubs in the US, along with Atlanta, Denver, Dallas Fort Worth, and Chicago O’Hare. The network created between these six airports covered 2.2% of the US’s domestic air travel demand in 2023. Adding just a few more of the most popular airports in the US to this list and creating a network of 21 airports would cover nearly 25% of the US’s domestic air travel demand in 2023, according to IDTechEx.

New York (JFK) to London (LHR) is one of the busiest routes in the world, with approximately 3.8 million passengers flying this route in 2023. At 5,500km, it is perhaps outside the realms of possibility for hydrogen power. However, LHR would be one of the starting points for creating a hydrogen-powered network in Europe, along with other important hubs like Schiphol and Frankfurt.

Hydrogen-powered flight will not be easy, warns IDTechEx. There are still many technical challenges around certification, hydrogen fuel cells, longevity, making motors powerful enough for airplanes, hydrogen storage, and more. However, with the right airports investing in LH2, refueling technologies will be a key step in getting the upcoming industry off the ground.

IDTechEx’s new report, Sustainable Future Aviation 2025-2045: Trends, Technologies, Forecasts, provides a detailed analysis of hydrogen and electric flight technologies across commercial airplanes, business jets, and general aviation. Its forecasts show how the industry will grow in the number of planes sold, revenue from sales in US$, battery demand for electric planes in GWh, and motor demand for planes in GW.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) and JFK Millennium Partners (JMP), the company selected to build and operate the highly anticipated $4.2 billion Terminal 6 (T6) at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), announced that 18 artists have been selected to debut new public art commissions when the terminal opens to passengers in 2026. The art program is led by Public Art Fund, the independent nonprofit organization dedicated to art in public spaces. The featured artists, including 10 from New York City, will capture the spirit of New York with a diverse range of artworks that will be seamlessly integrated into the terminal. Sculptures, suspended installations, wall works, and glass mosaic floor medallions will create a unique New York sense of place.

The project supports the Port Authority’s vision to create a world-class passenger experience at JFK, as it has done at the award-winning, internationally recognized terminals at the new LaGuardia Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport’s Terminal A, through inspirational public art, operational excellence, 21st century technology and world-class functionality.

The new Terminal 6 is a key component of the Port Authority’s $19 billion transformation of JFK into a world-class gateway, with two new terminals; two expanded and modernized terminals; a new ground transportation center; and an entirely new simplified roadway network.

Art takes a starring role at the new Terminal 6. Walls, floors, ceilings and volumes will all be enriched with architecturally integrated, site-specific commissions by some of the most extraordinary artists of our time. Like Terminal 6 and New York itself, the reach of the art program is global, featuring artists from near and far, from groundbreaking, emerging voices to senior, celebrated figures.
